Jay Chou’s “It Rains all Night” is a really well-done MV

I’m not gonna lie, I think most of the new stuff that Jay Chou (周杰倫 / 周杰伦) puts out sounds the same, and it’s only after I listen to it a few times that I start to really feel it. “It Rains all Night” (雨下一整晚) is pretty cool though in the way it literally travels through time, not only as depicted in the mv, but also through the instruments and vocal styling of the song. The song features the lyrical mastery of Vincent Fang (方文山), who always puts out great stuff when he collaborates with Jay.

Although the piece starts simple, with a modern R&B feel and a lone guitar, there’s a twist to it, and Jay takes it back old school, bringing in the erhu, guzheng and a Beijing Opera feel to his singing.

It’s a pretty song, but what really struck the first few times I listened to it/watched it, was the video. Jay Chou does a great job directing a storyline that merges the past and present through a photographer falling in love with the bride. I’m wondering if this is practice for a movie, because I am sooo game. I would love to watch that!
